The
Digital Humanities Initiative brings together scholars from
around the university for the purpose of advancing research in
the application of information technology to scholarly activities
in the humanities and the exploration of the human record. Its
goal is to develop innovative computing tools, digital collections,
and hypertextual archives of broadly significant academic and
educational value to the humanities. The consortium builds on
interdisciplinary collaboration between current projects and existing
research centers and aims to expand in a synergistic manner the
role of information technology research at Texas A&M University.
The initial participants include the Melbern G. Glasscock Center
for Humanities Research, the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries
and the Texas A&M University Libraries. The initiative addresses
several of the goals of Texas A&M University’s blueprint for the
future, Vision 2020, by advancing interdisciplinary studies, enhancing
research in the humanities, and providing new opportunities for
graduate study, thus helping to make Texas A&M University a leader
in the critical area of humanities informatics.
The Digital Humanities Initiative is funded by the Office
of the Vice President for Research through a Telecommunications
and Informatics Task Force grant, with additional support from
the College of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts, the Glasscock
Center, and the Texas A&M University Libraries.
